MugShot Monday ft. David Van Dixhorn
What a special season of life it was when I got to know Dave at Soul City Church back in 2010. Soul City had just launched in the West Loop of Chicago, and was in its very beginning stages of becoming what it is today; a church on fire that is busting at the seams. Talk about a servant heart, Dave devoted that year to lead in the construction and design of the building WITHOUT pay. Unbelievable. My first time at Soul City was right before Christmas, and because the church population at that time maxed at about 120, you saw a lot of the same people working in numerous roles. It was pretty amazing to see, actually. People so devoted to serving each other and growing that place. I believe I officially met Dave when I got asked to be a part of their Christmas choir for their Christmas service.. made up of about 8 people.. haha. It was Charlie Brown Christmas style... maybe not the most musically gifted bunch, but the passion definitely tugged at some hearts and changed a few lives forever. It was after that we got to serve the families from Brown Elementary at the Soul City Christmas Store, we suffered through several brutal boot camp workouts with Terry Shanahan and Juliet Korver (Kyle Korver's trainer and wife), we partnered with the Kyle Korver Foundation and Brown Elementary and put on Soul City's first art show with student artwork from Brown, and we hit up the driving range on a Tuesday. Dave served coffee on Sundays, he shoveled snow on the sidewalks on the weekend, and he greeted people with a smile and made them feel so welcome. Never before had I been so invested and involved in so many different ways at a church, let alone the beginning stages. To see how much the church has exploded and impacted so many lives in the city now, has been one of the greatest joys to see. So many lifelong friendships were made there. It truly felt like family and was an irreplaceable time in my life. People like Dave are irreplaceable. He lights up a room. He has been such a wonderful example to me in more ways than one, and I am blessed to call him my friend! So, all that being said, here he is!
